Travelling to The Edge

It is a journey to get to Pavones! And it is always worth it.

Actual travel time will vary, but a safe bet is a full-day of travel to arrive from the US.

It is a longer trip from Europe.

If you are travelling from a major US city, if you leave on an early Saturday morning flight it is possible to arrive in Pavones that evening.

​

Depending on your departure city, you may choose to fly internationally and stay overnight in San Jose on Friday and travel domestically to Pavones on Saturday. 

​

There are very early morning domestic flights to San Jose that make it possible to depart Pavones and catch your international flight home on the same day. If you are hard pressed to take an early international flight home, there is the option to take a late night taxi from Pavones to San Jose at an extra cost to get you there for an early morning flight.

Here are the big factors that you should consider before booking your international flight:

1. How do you want to get domestically to Pavones? 

​

A) Fly 50 min Sansa Airlines from San Jose to Golfito.

• From Golfito, it is 1.5 hour taxi to The Residence

• This taxi will be arranged and is covered in the cost of your retreat. 50% of the roads on this trip are paved and comfortably passable. The other 50% is unpaved and windy, making the trip tougher for anyone who gets carsick easily. The pro of this option is it is door to door service airport to The Residence.

B) Fly 50 min Sansa Airlines from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez

• From Puerto Jimenez, it is a 45-minute boat ride to Pavones.

• You will need to take a taxi from the Puerto Jimenez airport to the boat dock on your own.

• I will arrange the boat for you, but the cost will be in addition to your retreat price (price dependent on how many other retreaters choose this option)

• I will arrange a pickup from the boat landing to The Edge Residence

• This is an exciting option as you will likely see dolphins on your way; it is a tropical welcome to your remote paradise, and includes a classic Pavones boat landing e.g. driving the boat straight onto the sand and watching it get hauled out by a tractor. ​

C) Rent a car in San Jose and make a Pacific Coast road trip out of your adventure.

• It is approximately 7 hours to drive directly to San Jose to Pavones without stopping.

• This allows you to stop in some other beloved beach towns mid-way between Pavones and San Jose to get a feel for a different beach life and see more of the countryside before hunkering into retreat mode.

• This is for the traveler with a little more time to spend on either end of their trip who has the curiosity and confidence to drive and arrive independently to The Residence.

Once you decide which option for domestic arrival is best for you, I will help recommend the best complementary international flights.

2. Are you comfortable without your own mode of transportation while in Pavones? 

​

Answer 1: "Yes!" Great. Transportation to/from all excursions will be provided. You are a 5-10 minute walk to the beach and a 10-15 minute walk to the nearest grocery. That said, before your arrival we will ensure the house is stocked with any dietary-informed snacks you need and we should have everything you need on site. 

 

Answer 2: "Not really." Okay! Your choices are to rent a car in San Jose and drive the full 7 hours to Pavones; rent a car in Golfito after arriving via domestic flight and drive 1.5 hours, or rent a quad while in Pavones. We can also work with The Residence to explore the option of having bicycles kept at the  bottom of the hill for any retreaters who want to cruise that way.

The trip may feel long to arrive, but once you have arrived the feeling of being at the edge of it all will be so worth it.
